Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) Heart Defects & Autism
SSRI Drugs "SSRIs"
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or SSRI drugs are a group of antidepressant medications used to treat depression and anxiety. Some of the more popular SSRIs include
There have been connections established between the use of SSRI drugs by pregnant women and coronary problems in their babies. Specifically, there has been a six-fold increase in Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in the Newborn (PPHN) among babies whose mothers used SSRIs while pregnant.
Now, there is growing concern that the risk to the health of the babies is much greater. Even Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Prozac, has acknowledged the possible link between SSRI use by pregnant women and resulting atrial (ASD) and ventricular (VSD) heart defects in their babies.
SSRIs may be linked to the following heart defects in babies:
- atrial septal defects
- ventricular septal defects
- tetralogy of fallot
- hypoplastic left heart syndrome
- transposition of the great arteries or vessels
- patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)
- total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR)
- double outlet right ventricle (DORV), and
- coarctation of the aorta (CoA).
There is also growing evidence that certain SSRI drugs cause the birth defect craniosynostosis and recent studies have shown an increase in the chance of a baby being born with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) if the mother took these medications before the birth - even before pregnancy.
